NAACTelangana University was established through Act No. 28 of 2006 to make higher education accessible to the educationally backward district of Nizamabad. It began with six courses in the PG building of Govt. Giriraj College, Dubba, and moved on 30 January 2009 to its 577-acre campus at Dichpally on NH-44. An 8-member NAAC team visited the University on 21–23 December 2015 and awarded it NAAC "B" grade with a score of 2.61 in its first-cycle assessment.
Telangana University was the first among the state's newly formed universities to receive UGC 12(B) recognition, making it eligible for UGC grants; several of its teaching staff have received UGC-sponsored Major and Minor Projects, and a number of research scholars have received Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowships. It is the third-largest university in Telangana, after Osmania University (Hyderabad) and Kakatiya University (Warangal), and ranks ahead of the state's other newly formed universities — Satavahana University (Karimnagar), Mahatma Gandhi University (Nalgonda) and Palamuru University (Mahabubnagar). It offers the largest number of courses (26) among the newly formed universities, ranking third after Osmania and Kakatiya, and was the first among them to launch Ph.D programmes — in 13 disciplines.
The University has about 81 regular faculty members on rolls across its departments, most holding doctorates and some with foreign teaching and research experience, supported by 52 Assistant Professor (C). There are 8 regular non-teaching staff and around 260 non-teaching outsourced staff.

South Campus, Bhiknoor: a college building, a boys' hostel, a girls' hostel, and the Chemistry, Physics and Geo-Informatics & Social Work department buildings.
